Ever been let go from a job? If so, you know what an excruciating experience it can be. Your sense of loss and identity can become muddled. “Who am I?” and “What should I do next?” are big looming questions. Pat Flynn faced these questions when he was downsized as an architect. His story of a transitioning to a new adventure is one you have to hear…and we’re happy to bring it to you here!
If you don’t know Pat Flynn, you’re in for a treat this episode. Like Natalie Sisson and Chris Klinke, who told awesome stories about their journey on a past 2 Guys & Your Money episode, Pat Flynn also has a unique story. After being downsized from his dream job, he decided to pursue a different path than many expected….and is experiencing great success.
PK, Joe & OG discuss the recent Dave Ramsey brouhaha AND we finish the show by talking about films.
Of course, we’re giving five lucky listeners some Laura Vanderkam books, too!

Okay, whether you listened to the podcast or not….a couple questions: do you think Dave Ramsey should have mentioned 12% return….OR when was the time you had to “let go” of your past to latch on to a better future? I’d love to discuss both of these in the comments below.
DC @ Young Adult Money says
I gotta say I’m impressed with the weekly podcasts. I can’t imagine the work that goes into them, at least it sounds like a ton of work to me! I know someone who does daily podcasts (a pastor in his late 20s) and I’m always impressed with the time and effort he puts into them.
Average Joe says
Thanks, DC. They’re a labor of love…I’ve especially loved some of the emails we’ve received from listeners that they like the relaxed feel of the show. There’s a ton of hard-edged help podcasts out there, so we’re happy to be different.
Pauline says
Great podcast guys, keep it up! You make it look so easy like DC says, there sure is a ton of work behind but it doesn’t feel like it. Great guest too! Last time I had to let go was quitting my last job a few years ago. It was earlier than expected and I wasn’t sure I would be able to make the whole financial plan work but the uncertainty pushes you to make greater things.
Average Joe says
Thanks, Pauline. It’s incredible how often what feels like the “end of the world” ends up being just another waypoint on the road to the top.
Lance @ Money Life and More says
Congrats on such an awesome interview with Pat! I love his site and enjoyed hearing his story on your podcast! Keep landing these amazing guests!
Average Joe says
Absolutely, Lance! We’ll do our best.
Pat has a great story, doesn’t he? Just when things looked pretty dire, his network and drive won the day.
Sicorra says
Excellent interview!! Sometimes being “let go” is the greatest gift a company can give you. And I love the way his new book is setup. It sounds very exciting and innovative.
Average Joe says
Thanks, Sicorra. I agree. My dad spent 38 years at a company and now still talks about the day he left as the best day of his life. I don’t want to wait 38 years to have that “a-ha” moment.
Jeremy @ Modest Money says
I enjoyed the Pat Flynn interview. It’s always interesting to hear how online entrepreneurs got started. Very cool how he turned getting laid off into the start of a very successful online business. I wish things had gone so well when I got laid off from my previous job. The dominoes don’t usually all fall into place so perfectly.
Average Joe says
What’s interesting is how he already had the seeds of a business started when he was let go. When we interviewed Laurie Ruettiman for our end-of-year show, she’d had the same experience: she turned blogging into her full time job when her job went away.
Kevin Watts @Graduatingfromdebt says
I have been following Pat Flynn’s story for years. Great job on the interview.
Steve MoneyPlanSOS Stewart says
I’m jumping in here early (haven’t listened to Pat Flynn’s interview yet but I’m sure it will be awesome).
About the “Dave Ramsey said 12% thing”: You are right. We focus on the rate-of-return more than the simple fact that we should start saving money with the mindset of reaching long-term goals.
I’m not concerned that most of my investments haven’t averaged 12% (some have done better over the past 5 years, most have not over the past 10 years) but I have more money now than if I hadn’t started saving!
Average Joe says
Yeah, people who complain about the 12% thing are really, really missing the point AND if you take the comments he made on the radio around defending the 12%, it’s all about the face that people need to start saving.
Glen @ Monster Piggy Bank says
Great work getting Pat on the show, he is almost like a celebrity with how popular his blog is.
Average Joe says
Thanks, Glen! I think he’s one of the internet’s biggest stars in the “help your website” area. I was SO grateful when he agreed to come on the show.
